Business owners meeting to choose a marketing agency for their Austin company

How to Choose a Marketing Agency in Austin: A Vetting Checklist

Austin has no shortage of marketing agencies, and an increasing number of them are one or two people running an agency name off a handful of subcontractors, not a real team with in-house expertise. That’s not automatically bad, but you should know which one you’re hiring before you sign anything. Here’s what to actually check before committing a budget.

Ask to See Real, Verifiable Results

Not testimonials (actual before-and-after data, ideally for a business similar in size or industry to yours. Any agency worth hiring should be able to show a specific ranking improvement, a traffic graph, or a lead volume increase with a timeframe attached, not vague language like “we drove significant growth.” If they can’t show a specific number for a specific client, ask why) sometimes there’s a legitimate confidentiality reason, but often it’s because the results don’t exist in the form they’re implying.

Understand Who Actually Does the Work

Many agencies sell a service and then subcontract the actual execution to a freelancer or overseas team you’ll never talk to directly. This isn’t automatically a problem (some subcontracted work is excellent) but you should know it’s happening, because it affects response time, quality consistency, and who’s actually accountable when something goes wrong. Directly ask: “Who on your team will be doing my SEO/content/ads work, and will I ever talk to them?”

Watch for These Specific Red Flags

  • Guaranteed rankings or traffic numbers. No one controls Google’s algorithm or ad auction dynamics completely enough to guarantee a specific outcome. A guarantee like this is either misleading or backed by fine print that makes it meaningless.
  • Vague reporting, or no reporting cadence at all. You should get a real monthly report with actual numbers (rankings, traffic, leads, ad spend and return) not just an invoice and a status update that says “things are going well.”
  • Long contracts with no visible results requirement. A 12-month minimum contract isn’t automatically bad (some strategies genuinely take time) but you should see meaningful movement well before month 12, and the contract shouldn’t be the only thing keeping you as a client.
  • Ownership of your accounts and assets. Ask directly who owns your Google Ads account, your Google Business Profile, your domain, and your website code. It should be you, full stop (not the agency, and not a structure that makes it painful to leave if you’re unhappy.
  • Pressure to sign immediately. A legitimate agency can survive you taking a week to compare options and check references. Urgency tactics on a marketing services contract are a bad sign, not a good deal.

Questions Worth Asking Directly

  • “What happens if I want to leave? Do I keep my accounts, my content, and my data?”
  • “Can I talk to two current clients in a similar industry to mine?”
  • “What does your reporting actually look like) can I see a real sample report?”
  • “What’s realistic to expect in 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months, specifically for my industry and competition level?”

The Better Business Bureau is also worth a quick check for complaint history before you sign anything. An agency that answers these directly and specifically, rather than deflecting to generalities, is showing you exactly how they’ll operate once you’re a paying client.

How Mindshare Consulting Approaches This

We show real client results with actual numbers, you always own your own accounts and assets, and our reporting includes the specific data (rankings, traffic, leads) that lets you judge whether the work is paying off, not just whether we say it is. If you want to compare us against another quote using the questions above, book a strategy call and ask us directly.

Conclusion

The right agency isn’t necessarily the biggest name or the cheapest quote, it’s the one that can show real, specific results, gives you a clear answer on account ownership and exit terms, and reports on actual numbers rather than vague progress language. Ask the direct questions above before you sign, and you’ll filter out most of the agencies worth avoiding before you’ve spent a dollar.
